WHY VOTE? 220,000 Dead Americans, With Many More To Come, Is One Good Reason I am always surprised to learn that only about one half of registered voters vote in elections. The rate goes up a little, to perhups 60%, in presidential elections, like this year. But if you don't vote, when you could have, you are letting other people control how your life, your healthcare, your civil rights, and those of your children and family, will be treated, after certain decisions are made. And some elections are decided by one vote. One vote. This is not the year to ignore voting (no year is.) But this year, we have a very clear choice. One candidate, Mr. Trump, is attacking his own experts, such as Anthony Fauci, as "idiots" and "disasters", while ignoring the disaster Mr. Trump is responsible for, by ignoring facts and evidence. The other candidate, Mr. Biden, will not ignore facts and evidence, and he will be guided by public health experts, to cut the viral spread and the disaster it has caused to every part of our country. You have a choice between the super spreader guy, Mr. Trump, or the guy who wants to save lives, Mr. Biden. There is only one rational choice, and most Americans are voting that way, this year. Mr. Trump continues to deny the obvious. He rejects science. He suggested the virus was going to be gone, like a miracle, every month since February. It is still with us. We are secing 50,000 new infections, daily. Other countries do not put up with this nonsense, which is disastrous to our economy, as well as to our way of life. The surprise is just how long Mr. Trump's enablers have allowed this to go on. James Mattis, Like Most Americans, Is Not Voting For Mr. Trump Here is another reason to vote for Mr. Biden, or at least not vote for Mr. Trump. James Mattis, an esteemed Marine general, who resigned as secretary of defense in 2018, released a statement on June 3, 2020. General Mattis warned Americans about Mr. Trump. General Mattis stated: When I joined the military, some 50 years ago, I swore an oath to support and defend the Constitution. Never did I dream that troops taking the same oath would be ordered under any circumstance to violate the Constitutional rights of their fellow citizens-much less to provide a bizarre photo op for the elected commander-in-chief, with military leadership standing alongside..Militarizing our response, as we witnessed in Washington, D.C., sets up a conflict-a false conflict-between the military and civilian society. It erodes the moral ground that ensures a trusted bond between men and women in uniform and the society they are sworn to protect, and of which they themselves are a part. General Mattis also stated that Mr. Trump is the first president "in my lifetime who does not try to unite the American people does not even pretend to try. Instead he tries to divide us. We are witnessing the consequences of three years without mature leadership. We can unite without him, drawing on the strengths inherent in our civil society. This will not be easy, as the past few days have shown, but we owe it to our fellow citizens; to past generations that bled to defend our promise; and to our children. We can come through this trying time stronger, and with a renewed sense of purpose and respect for one another." Mr. Mattis concluded his statement with this sentence: "Only by adopting a new path which means, in truth, returning to our original path of our founding ideals-will we again be a country admired and respected at home and abroad." Mr. Mattis full statement is available online by searching "James Mattis the Atlantic". I encourage everyone to read it before voting. What more really needs to be said here? We do not have to discuss how Mr. Trump has accused those who serve as suckers and losers. Mr. Trump. and his Republican enablers in the United States Senate (such as Alaska Senator Dan Sullivan, need to lose this election.). As General Mattis noted in his statement, we "must reject and hold accountable those in office who would make a mockery of our Constitution." And we owe it to our fellow citizens. And we owe it to those who bled to defend our values, which include "equal justice under law," Equal justice under law is not one of Mr. Trump's values, nor are they the values of our Republican Senators. They expect to and do receive special treatment under the law, due to their status, and/or their ability to hire a legion of lawyers to delay and avoid justice. And, as a retired lawyer, I can assure you that when Dan Sullivan and his Republican colleagues in our Senate rush Amy Barrett onto our Supreme Court, Americans will not receive "equal justice under law" from a court with a 6-3 supermajority of conservative Catholic Justices. Stay tuned for US Supreme Court decisions on elections, healthcare, civil rights, including voting rights, that will shock and offend most Americans. Remember, Catholics are in decline, for very good reasons, representing around one in four of five Americans. We are supposed to have a secular, non-religious court system. But this does not matter to the judges and justices appointed by Dan Sullivan and Mitch McConnell. This is what happens when you vote for Republicans. Ms. Barrett, and Mr. Kavanaugh, will be on the Court for the next 20-30 years. Start the healing process by voting for Dr. Al Gross as Mr. Sullivan's replacement. Please Vote This Year Ignore Deceptive Messaging Which Leaves Out Important Info, Like General Mattis' Statement About Mr. Trump And His Supporters We need changes. And that includes voting Republicans out of office at the national level, and the state level. When they actively increase the human, emotional, and economic suffering to Americans, just because they do not want to lead, or follow science, it is time to vote them out. But you have to vote for Democrats (or at least not vote for Republicans), if you want rational people, who accept evidence, facts, and science, back in control of your lives. And elected officials who honor their constitutional oaths. Those who do not need to hear from Mitch McConnell to decide what to do. Call if you have questions or comments. 907-349-4980.
