The harmonic blend of a good cigar and an aged whiskey is like pairing a favorite pair of jeans with a well-worn Stetson. They just fit. A medium to full-bodied cigar would pair well with the strong flavor of either bourbon or rye whiskeys, distilled in central Texas

Arman Texas Edition Corona pairs with Swift Single Malt Whiskey

The Bolivar Cigar Lounge house brand, Arman is a medium-bodied limited production Dominican blend. aged for ten years with smooth peppery undertones. A great complement is with the single malt whiskey from Swift Distillery in Dripping Springs. This small batch distillery uses a time-tested technique handed down by Scottish whiskey makers, to create a grain to glass libation in Central Texas Hill Country. The Swift’s do everything themselves to bring authenticity to each bottle. They double age, first in old oak Kentucky bourbon barrels to get the flavors of fruit, caramelized sugar and hints of vanilla to blend with the carefully prepare mash. Then moved to maturation in Oloroso sherry casks where the whiskey acquires a rich undertone of chocolate. The Arman is the perfect after dinner smoke while sipping on this handcrafted single malt.

Romeo y Julieta Reserva Real Lonsdale Pairs with the Kooper Family Rye

This medium-bodied cigar has notes of toasted nuts, peppers, and coffee with creamy undertones and just a hint of vanilla and cinnamon spice. Cigar Aficionado rated the Reserva Real Lonsdale as Outstanding in 2017. It pairs well with the Dripping Springs-based Kooper Family Whiskey Co’s Family Rye. The rye is made from two rye whiskeys, one from Tennessee and one from Illinois, which are blended by the Kooper family in American White Oak casks. The water used in this blending is from Ardrey Springs which flows from the Edwards Aquifer across a limestone bed. That coupled with the hot arid summers and mild winters of Texas Hill Country, give this rye whiskey its smooth smoky flavor with hints of apple, black pepper, and vanilla. The Romeo y Julieta Reserva Real will complement this rye either poured neat or on the rocks.

Fuente Fuente OpusX – Lost City Pairs with Balcones True Blue 100

OpusX-Lost City is a full-bodied complex cigar that has a rich sweet smokiness with every draw. Originally the tobacco was grown as a backdrop for the movie “The Lost City” directed by Andy Garcia, a famous cigar aficionado. The Fuente family created this cigar in honor of the film. It has spicy pepper notes mellowed by undertones of cocoa and caramel creating a smooth smoke. The perfect complement to Lost City would be Balcones Distilling’s True Blue 100 bourbon. While True Blue is as complex as other over-proof spirits, its blend of honeyed fruit, cinnamon and use of roasted corn mash smoothes out the high-proof after taste. While it is good straight up with a splash of water, this also makes a good Old Fashion that can be savored while enjoying the lingering flavor of the Lost City.
