AsK meificareabout the planet Lets be honest, green practices in business are not very cost effective. Sustainability is a great buzzword used often these days, but what does it really mean to implement eco friendly practices? That a depends on what kind of waste you are dealing with. Most house hold waste is about 75% recyclable, and the average household recycles about 25-30% of that. In the early days of my organic salon journey, I remember feeling guilty for all of the trash I was creating at work. Very little was able to be recycled, and I had worked so hard to make sure the products I was using shared my value system; sustainable, recycled and recyclable. Trying my best to recycle what I could felt exasperating. There was no curbside pick up, and we were limited to what they would take yet, every time there was an un recyclable item, I would agonize over what to do with it. Reuse? Repurpose? Regift? Recycling in Alaska is far better than it used to be, but still we are pretty far behind most places in the lower 48 I was spending time and money picking products that were better for the environment, our bodies, etc, just to feel defeated from all the trash that I was putting in the landfill. To give you an idea of the kind of trash salons contribute every day in North America. 63,18olbofhair 42,122lbs ofleftover hair color 109.512 Ibsfoils 06392 Ibs paperand plastics A grand total of 421,206Ibs a DAY putinto the landfill!! In 2007 I bought Salon DaVinci with the intention of creating a truly sustainable experience. 11 years later, we have finally done it! 2016 was a game changer for us. A company called Green Circle salons is collaborating with one of our beauty supply houses here and has made salon recycling accessible for Alaskan salons. This was what I had been waiting for! We can now recycle close to 95% of our salon waste. Plastics 1-7, styrofoam, batteries, excess hair color, hair, metal product tubes, hairspray cans, foils, gloves, and more! When you look at the science behind recycling, its simple. If its not easy, and accessible, people are way less likely to recycle.
